Michael William Mullen is the Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper

 

Michael has 30 plus years of professional experience in the environmental field most of it related to water quality, aquatic ecology and watershed management. During this time he has done environmental consulting, research, environmental education and service projects and has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. For almost the same length of time he has been an environmental advocate. His environmental advocacy dates back to efforts through the Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club to expand the wilderness areas in Alabama and to prevent issuance of permits for shipboard burning of hazardous waste in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Before retiring from Troy University in 2006 Michael was involved in water quality monitoring and research for ten years. He taught both undergraduate and graduate classes including graduate level classes in erosion and sediment control and stormwater management.

 

Michael was introduced to the Waterkeeper movement and the Waterkeeper Alliance and encouraged to form a Waterkeeper group for the Choctawhatchee by David Whiteside, currently the Tennessee Riverkeeper and a founder of Black Warrior Riverkeeper. Michael is a founding member of the Environmental Education Association of Alabama and the Alabama Water Watch Association for which he is currently a Board member and vice-president.

 

Mr. Mullen holds a baccalaureate degree with a double major in chemistry and biology from Athens College, a master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Arkansas (GIT), a master’s degree in biology from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He also has a certificate in watershed management from the University of British Columbia. He is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC).
